The two-right-answers problem

You know OARS cold. You still missed it.

Answer B

Warm. Supportive. Exactly what a caring coach would say. Wrong.

Answer D

Also warm. Also supportive. Somehow right, and you can't explain why.

Your score

Stuck, no matter how many flashcards you make or how many times you reread your notes.

Here's what I learned the hard way. Knowing the material and passing this exam take two different skills. Your training program taught you the first one. This playbook teaches the second: how to think through a scenario like the coach the exam is looking for.

What's inside

52 pages. A new way to read every question.

It's a downloadable PDF you can read on any device or print. Start with Part 0. It'll change how you read every vignette after it.

  • Part 0: Think Like an NBHWC Coach. The six thinking traps, each with original scenarios and a self-check, plus the Pre-Answer Ritual you'll run on every question.
  • The Official Blueprint. All five 2026-2030 content outline domains, their weights, where each lives in the playbook, and what's new in this outline.
  • Parts 1 to 10: the core content. Coaching mindset, MI 4.0, stages of change, self-determination theory, appreciative inquiry, positive psychology, ethics and scope, the health numbers behind referral questions, communication skills, and exam strategy.
  • Nine questions for every core concept. What it is, why it matters, how to spot it in a vignette, the distractors that look right, a memory trick, sample coaching language, and the most common trap.
  • Final-week tools. A one-page cram sheet, a 10-minute review, a 2-minute exam-day warm-up, and the Top 100 concepts to know cold.

How it works

Logic first. Content second.

Most prep hands you more content. This playbook teaches the exam's logic first: who's doing the thinking in each answer, what stage the client is really in, when to stop exploring and ask for commitment, and when coaching has to pause for a referral. Then the content clicks into place.

Every scenario in it is original. You're learning how to think through any question, not memorizing questions somebody remembered.

Your guide

Hey, I'm Tish.

I'm a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). Trained at Duke. Board certified nationally.

I sat for my first practice exam knowing the content cold and still missed question after question. So I stopped studying my flashcards and started studying my misses. Six patterns showed up. Once I could name them, I could catch them. And I passed.

This playbook is the notes I wish someone had handed me on day one.

Questions, answered

Does this include real exam questions?

No. Nothing in the playbook comes from the NBHWC exam or from NBHWC's official practice tests. Every scenario is original, written to teach a way of thinking you can use on any question.

Is it updated for the 2026-2030 content outline?

Yes. It's mapped to the five domains and weights in the current outline, including the competencies that are new in this cycle.

Does it replace my training program or the official practice tests?

No, and it isn't meant to. Use it alongside your program's materials and NBHWC's own practice tests. It's the thinking layer that ties them together.

When should I start it?

Anytime you're studying, but it's most powerful once you've taken at least one practice exam. That's when Part 0 starts explaining your misses.

Will it guarantee I pass?

No resource can honestly promise that. Your training, your preparation, and you pass this exam. The playbook helps you think more clearly while you do it.

Can I share it with my study group?

Each copy is licensed to one person. If your friends are studying too, send them here so they can get their own.

What format is it?

A 52-page PDF you can read on your phone, tablet, or computer, or print. Text copying is turned off to protect the content.
